About the Book

Training for Cross-Cultural Mission
In Preparing to Serve, author Robert Brynjolfson draws on his global research into missionary training, exploring practices from both Western and non-Western contexts. His study reveals a diverse range of approaches to equipping cross-cultural workers, shaped by cultural, theological, and practical realities. The book underscores the importance of establishing clear training objectives and developing programs that begin with a solid understanding of the local context. Brynjolfson highlights the crucial role of the trainer--not merely as an instructor, but as a mentor and model of missionary life and character.
He also outlines thoughtful criteria for selecting trainees and identifies the hallmarks of effective training: spiritual formation, ministry competence, emotional and relational maturity, and contextual adaptability. Central to the book is the concept of holistic equipping--engaging the head (knowledge), heart (character), and hands (skills). Brynjolfson emphasizes the value of a contextualized curriculum and the need for ongoing, intentional assessment of both the training process and the participants.

About the Author :
Dr. David Harley (Cambridge, Bistrol University, ANCC, Columbia International University) and his wife, Rosemary, worked as missionaries in Ethiopia. After returning to the U.K., they taught for fifteen years at All Nations Christian College in the U.K., where David was Principal from 1985-1993. His doctoral dissertation from Columbia International University was on missionary training centers in the Two-Thirds World. The Harleys together served as Mission Training Consultants of Crosslinks (an Anglican missionary society) and as International Missionary Training Associates with the WEF Missions Commission. David is an ordained Anglican.

Review :

Dr. David Harley's book provides a comprehensive introduction to cross-cultural missionary training. It will be of benefit to all those who are responsible for training missionaries, both in the West and in the Two-Thirds World. It will be especially helpful for those who are seeking to start new missionary training centers.

-From the Foreword, David Tai-Woong Lee, D.Miss, Seoul, Korea, Chairman, WEF Missions Commission
