Review :
This is another fascinating book by Michael Senior, who has wrtten too many to list here, on various aspects of local history. As the title suggests, the theme of the book is drowned lands like the better-known Cantre'r Gwaelod and Lyonesse. Mr Senior has traced the popular myths surrounding cataclysmic inundations through ancient civilisations worldwide and sets out clearly the common denominators which many fables share. Though as he says, 'This is not to deny the relation of the fable to real once-experienced events,' and the book explores the truth behind Welsh and other legends. Llys Helig in Conway Bay, itself the subject of legend, is thoroughly analysed and Mr Senior appears to have read everything ever printed on the subject. Atlantis too takes a bow and those readers who have enjoyed the recent television series 'Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age' will find the book of especial interest. There is a good bibliography together with twenty-eight black and white illustrations. Mr Senior tells a riveting story, and I could not put the book down until I had discovered the truth about Llys Helig. There are a very few lacunae in his reporting of up-to-date scholarship: Glyn Daniel's theories about the Megalith builders' influence spreading from the east were in fact disproved in his own lifetime through advances in archaeology. Also, on page 109, Mr Senior refers to 'the first contact of Bronze Age people with their Neolithic predecessors', which gives the perhaps misleading impression that he still subscribes to the superseded theory that there were successive waves of immigrants to these shores instead of, as is more probable, the diffusion of new ideas and influences. But such comments play only an infinitesimal part in an otherwise sound, up-to-date and informative book. Whether you live in Conway or Cardigan Bay, or anywhere subject to sea-change past and present, this book is the most succinct synthesis of theories on the causes of such sea-change that I have yet discovered. Gwasg Carreg Gwalch are to be congratulated also on publishing such an attractive book at such a reasonable price.
