About the Book

This text explores the implementation and use of Integrated Software Systems (ISS) in Product Development (PD), with the aim of identifying the implications of the introduction of software for the practice and outcome of the PD process. Areas addressed include: data and information capture, storage, transfer and control; knowledge generation, accumulation, reuse, transfer and integration; technological search and heuristics, (physical and virtual) trial and error, the development of hybrid prototyping capabilities, expansion and contraction of search spaces; techno-organizational physical (feedback) learning and virtual (forward) learning; and flexibility and the ability to respond to change. The book aims to shed light on the influence of the introduction of Integrated Software Systems in Product Development in reshaping technological, organizational, knowledge and learning processes; and the implications of the implementation and use of ISS for the organization's innnovative and learning potential. The growth of the organization's potential is understood in terms of the increased ability of the organization to maintain flexible processes, increase exploration, incorporate (tacit and codified) feedback and requirements into product and processes definition; adapt its techno-organizational routines to respond to radical and incremental changes at different stages of the PD process and control the evolution of product and process configurations; manage information and knowledge flows across the extended organization and along the total product life cycle.

Table of Contents:
Review of theoretical issues; managing change and complexity in product development - issues of flexibility and control; integration - part 1 from digital mock-up to the virtual product - the role of software in supporting the integration of knowledge, technology and organization; part 2 technology and organizational migration towards an integrated Product Development environment; design spaces - the role of software in shaping the processes of knowledge-technology variation, selection and retention; hybrid prototyping or how software alters the processes by which knowledge converges into artefacts and processes.
