About the Book

Fully illustrated exhibition catalogue exploring Richard Hamilton's abiding fascination with James Joyce's Ulysses, from watercolours and studies of the late 1940s, to magnificent large-scale etchings of the 1980s, through to Hamilton's most recent computer-generated Iris prints. Imaging Ulysses explores Richard Hamilton's engagement with James Joyce's Ulysses, the great modernist masterpiece that has haunted Hamilton's visual imagination for more than fifty years. Designed by Richard Hamilton and written by Stephen Coppel, this fully illustrated exhibition catalogue demonstrates how Hamilton's thoughts on Joyce have evolved and matured over half a century, producing some of the most compelling images of his career, from the rarely seen drawings, watercolours and studies from the late 1940s, to the magnificent large-scale etchings completed during the 1980s, to his most recent computer-generated Iris prints. Joyce's novel relates the wanderings of Leopold Bloom, a modern day Odysseus, during a single day in Dublin - 16 June 1904, now celebrated worldwide each year as Bloomsday. The narrative is divided into eighteen episodes, each written in a different, often highly experimental, style. Hamilton sought to create a pictorial equivalent by adopting a visual paraphrase for each episode, seeing the task as an intellectual challenge that Joyce had laid down for him. Hamilton originally conceived the idea of creating a new, illustrated edition of Ulysses in 1947. This unusually extended work in progress offers a unique insight into the creative processes of one of Britain's most innovative and original artists. The catalogue is published to accompany the touring exhibition Imaging Ulysses, curated by Stephen Coppel and organised by the British Council in association with the British Museum.
