About the Book

A factual history of the Mimosa, the ship that carried Welsh settlers to Patagonia.

About the Author :
Susan Wilkinson was born in India, grew up in Ireland and now lives in Canada. Her great-great uncle was Thomas Greene, the doctor on the voyage to Patagonia. She is the author of "Sebastian's Pride", a novel set in 19th century Argentina, and is a contributor to the "Buenos Aires Herald", "Ninnau" and "Y Drych". She travels regularly to Argentina and has been an invited speaker at conferences in Patagonia.

Review :
This book is the biography of a ship. Although it travelled the seas for almost twenty years, the Mimosa is best known for one voyage -- the 1865 journey of a group of Welshmen to set up a colony in Patagonia. Susan Wilkinson is the great-great niece of the doctor who accompanied the colonists on that trip. Her studies of the Patagonian colony and its founding led to her interest in the ship. Wilkinson has done an incredible amount of research to trace the Mimosa from its construction in Aberdeen to its eventual grounding on the coast of West Africa. She provides information about the company that constructed her, the materials used in construction, the investors who owned her, the captains who sailed her and the cargoes she carried. (The Patagonian trip was the only time she carried human passengers.) All this is set against the backdrop of the British shipping industry in the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Although a long chapter is devoted to the Patagonian voyage, she also looks at the more normal cargoes for the Mimosa -- tea, sugar, cotton and palm oil -- and provides a brief history of the trade in each. There is also a good bit of biographical information about the people involved -- the man who supervised her construction, the main investors, the captains, and, of course, the passengers on the trip to Patagonia. Two appendices contain a list of every voyage the Mimosa made, arranged by captain, and details of the passengers on her most famous journey. It's a wonderful book with a very readable story.
