About the Book

An interesting colour illustrated booklet offering an entertaining introduction to various Welsh rugby heroes of the 20th century. Features 17 black-and-white photographs. Reprint; first published February 2002.

About the Author :
Androw Bennett is a well-known authour and has written biographies of Welsh sporting hereos including Robert Croft and Jonothan Humphreys.

Review :
The recent rugby scene in Wales has proved uninspiring when compared with some of the decisive victories of preceding decades, and this gives Androw Bennett the thrust for his book. In the space of seventy pages, he examines the contribution of Welsh players to the game, discussing their strengths and techniques. The focus falls on the period after the Second World War, and some readers may feel that players from earlier in the century should have been included: Dickie Owen, for example. Interestingly, although Scott Quinnell receives his fair share of praise, he is seen as being overshadowed by his father, Derek. Bennett also writes of J. P. R. Williams, Ieuan Evans, Gerald Davies, Ray Gravell, Scott Gibbs, Barry John, Gareth Edwards, Mervyn Davies and Neil Jenkins. Such a publication would clearly be incomplete without the inclusion of photographic illustrations, and the sixteen shots of players in action are appropriately selected. A much respected history of modern Wales by K. O. Morgan has nine index entries on rugby, whereas there are only six on the First World War and four on religious revivals. Androw Bennett states that the heroes of rugby will soon be discussed in the same breath as Owain Glyndŵr and Lloyd George. I rather doubt this myself, but, at the same time, there can be little doubt that rugby players are among the folk heroes of our time. It is an indication of Bennett's passion that he decided to qualify as a referee. This passion has now extended to writing and I am sure it will find a large readership. The modest price is a strong selling point.
