About the Book

A humorous, tongue-in-cheek, alphabetically arranged guide to holiday locations in Wales. Black-and-white cartoons and photographs. First published in 1984.

Review :
The Unofficial Guide to Wales is a rough guide to Wales published at least ten years before the Rough Guide ever got around to it. It’s a pocket-sized introduction to many things Welsh, and a guide to many places in this beautiful country of ours. It is also written from a uniquely Welsh perspective, and at times in an extremely irreverent and satirical manner that could only possibly be permitted from the pen of one of our own! WARNING: do not take all the text at face value or to be literally true as some politicians did recently. Much of it is satire, and references to Welsh-speaking groups in North Wales offering guided tours of smouldering holiday homes should be read in the same spirit as the fact that all council business in Wales is conducted in song! This particular part of the introduction is a great metaphor for the political situation encountered throughout the country. Introductions to the Eisteddfod, flora and fauna, sport and recreation, entertainment, eating and drinking, buildings, and where to stay, are offered in the same vein and, whatever you do, never attempt to use the short vocabulary on page 25 where ‘Ble mae’r archfarchnad?’ [Where is the supermarket?] is translated as ‘Do you sell anything apart from coffins?!’. The volume goes on to introduce the reader to all the (old) counties of Wales, visiting most of its most important cities, towns and villages in turn. Each short description contains a wealth of (accurate) information presented in an entertaining fashion. As it was first printed almost twenty years ago (this is the fourth impression) it is inevitable that the design and layout have dated somewhat; even its content has dated in that holiday homes are not quite the news they were, and surely the Millennium Stadium and the Welsh Assembly would merit at least a few (probably satirical) words in the section for Cardiff if a new edition were to be produced. But don’t let this put you off. Never believe anyone that suggests the Welsh take themselves too seriously, and if you take this entertaining and informative volume too seriously then you do so at your own peril!
