About the Book

1989 marks the 15th year of publication of the BBC Broadcasting Research Department's Annual Review of BBC Broadcasting Research Findings, but this issue is the first to be published in conjunction with John Libbey & Company. The objective of this issue of the annual review is to make available to a wider public a selection of the most significant research undertaken by the BBC's audience research department over the last 12 months. Thus the articles in this year's volume focus on a wide range of issues. An analysis is offered of the general pattern of youth viewing (16-24 age range), the audience for soap operas and the seasonal effect on TV audiences. The volume also looks at some technical issues in radio - notably the problems of radio audience measurement and an analysis of the types of radio being used and how audiences use them to obtain the stations they require. The Annual Review also presents findings on public attitudes to the BBC and its funding, on the breakfast time audience, and on two specific programmes, "Gardeners' World" and the educational programme "Spelling It Out". Finally, a summary of the basic audience information for both television and radio in 1988 is presented. This publication provides much needed empirical audience research data about broadcasting in Britain in the late 1980s and will prove to be indispensible for all media professionals and all researchers, writers, critics and teachers undertaking serious analysis of broadcasting.

Table of Contents:
Trends in viewing and listening 1988, Karen Day and Sue Pendlebury; television and youth, Karen Day; soap operas, Andrew Hemming; seasonality effects on television audiences, Peter Menneer; listeners and their radios, Kate Mitchell; public attitudes to the BBC and its funding, John Samuels; daily life at breakfast, Robin McGregor and Rosemary Bristow; spelling it out, Moira Bovill; gardeners' world, Irene Shaw; special projects issued during 1988.
