About the Book

A companion volume to "European Unity in Context - The Interwar Period", this book evaluates the notion of European unity in a period when European identity was subjected to the destructive consequences of Nazi and Fascist domination of much of the Continent. By counterposing the competing visions of transformation and reconstruction played out during the war years the book aims to provide broader-based and more complex insights into the forces that shaped the postwar period than those in coventional accounts that locate the thinking about European unity only in the years after 1945.

Table of Contents:
Prospects for the German domination of Europe in the era of the World War, W.Roobol; the Italian Fascist new order in Europe, P.J.Morgan; the anti-Bolshevik crusade and Europe, M.L.Smith; anti-Americanism in National-Socialist propaganda during the Second World War, P.M.R.Stirk; the integration of Czechoslovakia in the economic system of Nazi Germany, V.Prucha; making the new Netherlands? ideas of renewal in Dutch politics and society during the Second World War, J.C.H.Blom and W.ten Have; shaping a new Belgium - the CEPAG (Belgian Commission for the Study of Post-War Problems) 1941-1944, Brigitte Henau; reality not rhetoric - Belgian-Dutch diplomacy in Wartime London 1940-1944, Pierre-Henri Laurent; political Catholicism, European unity and the rise of Christian Democracy, Micheal Burgess; British ideas of European unity and regional confederation in the context of Anglo-Soviet relations, David Wiegall; the wartime National Fronts in Eastern Europe - ideal and reality, Ben Fowkes; the American challenge and the origins of the politics of growth, D.Ellwood.
