About the Book

With its rich deposits of non-ferrous metals and other natural resources, such as China Clay, Cornwall was one of the pivotal areas for Britain's industrial revolution. The wealth generated by these resources and the need to find means of moving them efficiently for onward shipment also led to the development of an intricate network of lines, some later forming part of the networks owned by the Great Western and London & South Western railways, others destined to remain no more than mineral lines for the duration of their lives. Although the inevitable decline of much of the the Duchy's industrial base has led to a commensurate reduction in the level of railway provision, Cornwall still possesses, largely through the survival of the China Clay industry, a number of rural branches and byways that still make a major contribution to the local economy. In the second of the new Branches & Byways series, noted railway historian and photographer John Vaughan examines in depth some 25 of these branches. Some of the routes, such as the branches to Helston and Looe, are well-known, others, in particular some of the mineral lines, may be less familiar. The author, an acknowledged expert on Cornish railway history and operations whose earlier books on the subject have established him as a well-respected commentator on the subject, has drawn together more than 400 illustrations, many from his own archive - a number of which are previously unpublished - and from other sources, to provide a comprehensive history of the railway branches of the Duchy. His detailed text is supplemented not only by photographs, but with line drawings, timetable extracts and other items of ephemera, to make the book a must for all those interested in Cornish railways. Traditionally, Cornish railway books have always proved to be highly successful in commercial terms; this new addition to the available work on the subject is certain to build upon the established success of both the OPC imprint and also the new Branches & Byways series.

About the Author :
