Review :
Dim ond pobl efo bywydau prysur sy’n ysgrifennu eu hunangofiant yn 37 oed, felly wrth i’r bobl hynny dynnu tua’r trigain, mae galw am gyfrol arall. Dafydd Iwan oedd y cyntaf yng Nghyfres y Cewri, Gwasg Gwynedd, ymhell bell yn ôl ym 1981, ond mae’r gyfrol ddiweddaraf hon, Cân Dros Gymru, yn rhoi inni weddill yr hanes. Dywedir yn y rhagair mai ‘stori Dafydd Iwan y canwr’ a geir yma, ond dadlennir tipyn mwy na hynny. Rhennir y gyfrol fesul degawdau o’r chwedegau i’r nawdegau. Mae’n darllen yn rhwydd ac yn ddifyr, ac erbyn diwedd Gŵyl San Steffan, ro’n i wedi llowcio’r llyfr hwn a gefais yn fy hosan Nadolig. Roedd yna bethau ar goll yn y llyfr cyntaf, ac mae’n manylu arnynt yn y llyfr hwn. Cawn fwy o fanylion am hanes y llanc 17 oed yng Ngwersyll Glan-Llyn yn canu Folk’s Fun efo’i gitâr rad cyn penderfynu y gallai gyfieithu’r geiriau i’r Gymraeg. Ceir hanner dwsin o dudalennau am ‘y gân gyntaf’, a bonws annisgwyl yw cael geiriau tua dwsin o’r caneuon ar gof a chadw. Mae llawer o hanes helynt yr Arwisgo yma, sy’n hen hanes erbyn hyn, a’r ffwdan ynglŷn â’r gân Carlo, ond mae’n dda cael yr hanes o enau’r dyn ei hun a phytiau difyr o’r Caernarvon and Denbigh sy’n rhoi blas inni o awyrgylch wleidyddol y dydd. Ar y pegwn arall, ceir dwyster yr hanes am I.B. Griffith yn pledio ar Dafydd Iwan i beidio â chanu ‘Yno yr wylodd Efe’ am y rhai laddwyd yn gosod bom yn llwybr y trên brenhinol, ond ei chanu a wnaeth ym Mhafiliwn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol y Fflint. Mae’n un o’i ganeuon mwyaf ingol. Yr hyn sy’n gwneud pob hunangofiant yn wirioneddol ddifyr yw faint mae’r awdur yn fodlon ei ddatgelu am ei fywyd ef ei hun, a nodwedd y gyfrol hon yw ei gonestrwydd. Nid pawb sy'n gallu bod mor agored â hyn am ei fywyd personol ond, o lwyddo, mae’r cofiant yn golygu cymaint mwy. Mae’n sôn am hiraeth yn ei lethu pan oedd yn fyfyriwr ifanc yng Nghaerdydd, a’i duedd i feichio crio yn ddilywodraeth. Mae’n ceisio dadansoddi’r tristwch hwn, a chawn gip ar bersonoliaeth tipyn mwy cymhleth na’r disgwyl. Gyda’r un gonestrwydd y mae’n trafod dyddiau tywyll canol yr wythdegau – y baich nid yn unig o golli sawl etholiad ond o golli ei rieni ac o fyw drwy ysgariad. Rhoddodd y gorau i bregethu o bulpudau a daeth yn agos iawn at gael toriad yn ei iechyd. Bu raid iddo fynd trwy’r profiadau hyn tra oedd yn dal i fod yn ffigwr hynod gyhoeddus fel gwleidydd ac fel canwr. Mae tristwch y cyfnod yn cael ei adlewyrchu yng ngwleidyddiaeth y dydd – Thatcher, Rhyfel y Malvinas, Streic y Glowyr, ac ati, felly mae’n gofnod hanesyddol yn ogystal. Daw haul ar fryn yn ddiweddarach gydag ail briodas a magu teulu newydd, ond ni fu’r cyfnod hwnnw yn ddigwmwl gan i’w blentyn bach ddioddef salwch difrifol a threulio cyfnod mewn ysbyty. Ond nodwedd amlycaf Dafydd Iwan, fel canwr ac fel gwleidydd, yw meddu ar ffynhonnell o obaith mawr, ac mae’r gobaith hwn yn pefrio drwy’r llyfr. Ceir hanesion teithio tramor a chawn flas o beth yw ystyr bod ‘ar y ffordd’ fel canwr. Cyfrol yw hon fydd yn hynod boblogaidd ymysg pob math o bobl wahanol yng Nghymru. Roedd angen ei sgwennu, ac rwy’n falch i’r awdur gael y cyfle yng nghanol ei fywyd prysur i wneud hynny. Ynghyd â’r stori, mae casgliad arbennig o ddifyr o luniau o albwm y bardd, a hwnnw'n gasgliad sy’n gwneud y stori'n gyflawn. Peidiwch â synnu ychwaith os bydd cyfrol arall o hanes ei fywyd yn ymddangos ymhen ugain mlynedd arall!
