About the Book

For new students the language and concepts of midwifery care can at first be daunting. This book helps students to understand the expectations of midwifery training in relation to normal midwifery practice. It covers the basics of midwifery care including professional practice, frameworks informing midwifery care, key concepts and philosophies of care, communication and care skills, antenatal care, normal labour and birth, postnatal care, neonatal care and breastfeeding, as well as a brief introduction to medicines management in normal midwifery care. The book is designed to work alongside first taught modules in midwifery, and underpin training in subsequent years.

About the Author :
Sam Chenery Morris (RGN, RM, RSCN) is an Associate Professor in Midwifery at the University of Suffolk. She has worked in all areas of midwifery practice, from the community to the delivery suite, from 1995-2003 before moving into teaching in 2006. Sam has a PhD in midwifery education specifically around learning, assessment and grading in clinical practice and an MA in Interprofessional Healthcare Education. Her teaching expertise encompasses normal midwifery practice, neonatal care and screening, professional issues and research methods with her module responsibilities reflecting these areas. She is a link lecturer to local hospitals and has an External Examiner post at the University of Nottingham.  Sam has presented at local, national and international conferences including RCM and RCN conferences, the Doctoral Midwifery Research Society Global Conference and International Confederation of Midwives Congress. She has written chapters in edited books and articles in midwifery journals, including Evidence Based Midwifery, MIDIRS, and Nurse Education in Practice.

Excellent book and important for all midwifery students I would recommend this text to new student midwives - the book is a good resource to support student learning from proactice - especially the reflective activities asking the reader to consider experiences forom placement. Suplemented by suggested answers to tasks presented and so helpful for the year 1 student midwife. this book has all the key elements for practice especially third stage of labour, normal birth etc. this book also has a good section on medicines management which is key in the current complexity. Students and new mentors can occasionally find this complex this book is helpful for students to consider evidence in relation to practice Useful book. easy read.
Supplementary reading for first year midwifery students Excellent text for the orientation of students into the world of Midwifery practice.. Excellent book for first year students - provides them with everything they need to know. A user friendly text with numerous examples sign posting students with regard to their clinical and professional development. Clear links with expectations of pre-registration standards throughout. This is a really useful book. A really good text for first-year student midwives, but perhaps too simplistic for those later in their training. The layout is very clear and I really like the activity panels which direct them to further learning. May need to be updated once the new standards are published This is a very easy to read text that covers the key elements of the first year of study on a midwifery programme, providing a framework on which to build upon during subsequent years.
I particularly like how the NMC standards for pre-registration midwifery education and the essential skills clusters are identified at the start of each chapter, allowing the student to see how these apply to the modules being studied. This is a great book for midwives at the beginning of their training and portable too unlike some of the traditional midwifery texts An excellent book for student midwives. Some very useful activities included. excellent text which covers all aspects of normal midwifery This is a great resource for student midwives and midwives alike. It is clear, comprehensive and uses case studies and activities very effectively. Highly recommended. A succinct foundation level text that is highly recommended to all students commencing midwifery studies within the university.

Very good book- has some really useful scenarios for teaching in This is a good text for year 1 midwifery students. It covers the basics in an easy to follow and read format without overwhelming the first year student. Good overall book on the various principles encountered in midwifery . Excellent for HCA or those with and interest in the subject . Very readable and easily navigated. An interesting book which students will find useful this text will be valuable reading around the professional practice and normal midwifery modules to help gain insight into various aspects This is a good book for pre-course reading as well as throughout the first year of the programme. It focuses on normal midwifery practice and has a very user-friendly / interactive appeal. This book is an extremely useful book for students, in particular, first year students. It is well written, the format is easy to read and understand, and has an excellent focus on normality. The book is informative, applies theory to practice and provides a current reflection of midwifery practice. I like the activities as they stimulate and get you to think. Good use of diagrams and pictures, very useful for NMC Competencies and Essential Skills Clusters. Would recommend this book. This book is a good resource to a new student midwives learning from practice- mostly the case studies. This textbook is useful for some things but not really in enough detail in many areas. This is a very well designed text book. It is logical in approach and supports the learing of the student by providing guidance and activities of learning, I did like the inclusion of web sites and also the inclusion of some answers is helpful for the learning process.
I do like the bite size content, which encourages further exploration of the subject matter by the studnts, and the use of diagrams and tables supports all learning styles Very helpful to look at birth from a slightly different perspective. Useful as a lecturer preparing presentations and also as we try to promote normality
