Comprehensive introuctory text with helpful links to research for students to deeepen their knowledge and critical evaluation of HRM concepts in action.
A very good source for basic concepts. Especially suitable for stuents who are just being introduced to HRM
used new edition
It prompts students to think about the activities involved in Human Resource Management. It provides a wide range of HR concepts, practices, laws, regulations, and policies and above all it is written written and presented in a simplified manner.
A good introductory book
“An Introduction to HRM” by Nick Wilton comes highly recommended as being user-friendly and up-to-date. Having used it in class, I have found it to be an invaluable resource for both students and tutors of HRM courses.
From the teaching perspective, “An Introduction to HRM” can be used to structure an undergraduate HRM module. The textbook is divided into three parts, charting the development of HRM and concluding with a chapter on trends and future developments. The section on HRM in practice provides a solid overview of core HRM areas, including reward and L&D. Each chapter provides a case study and questions, which can be used in tutorials to consolidate the key issues and to enable students to develop critical skills. Key theories and authors are clearly highlighted and the suggested reading is usefully further divided into categories, in order to encourage students to get used to consulting a range of resources.
For students, this text is ideal for those who need a one-stop resource for HRM, as well as for undergraduates who are studying HRM as a core subject. The chapter objectives and introduction clearly signpost the contents of the chapter and in class, students can turn to the summary points at the end of each chapter for a quick overview of the topics. The book also makes a good revision aid because each chapter concludes with a series of self-test questions, which students can use to help structure revision notes. Furthermore, the book is backed up with other student resources on the website.
This is a very useful book for Undergraduate students covering all key informtaion. It is easy to understand but does provide some depth of discussion.
A very comprehensive and well-designed textbook, which is considered an ideal choice for undergraduate modules and a fundamental guide for postgraduate students.
It certainly provides an updated literature about the most contemporary issues on HRM.
An excellent textbook that is highly readable and strongly based in recent research and theorisaton. Besides introducing students to management theories and approaches it also develops an evaluative approach to HRM subject and thus supports critical thinking. Case studies for workshops and tutorial sessions are practical and lend a vital support and perspective to subjects covered in the text. The book has been very well received by my students and generally seen as superior to text used earlier.
Not sufficiently related to the CIPD module specifications
This is an excellent addition to the range of texts on HRM. Current and clearly set out it deals with the core themes very well. The section on conflict and ACR is especially welcome
This text represents a helpful coverage of the context and main functional areas in HRM, complemented by a consideration of those issues that currently concern those working in this profession. As an introductory text it combines an appropriate selection and interpretation of subjects, inccorporating a critical appreciation, which can be applied to relevant case studies. However, it is more suited to those students with a UK focus rather than an international readership.
This is an excellent introduction to the field. Highly recommended.
This comprehensive text covers a range of HRM topics in a clear and well-organised way. Contemporary and critical issues are considered and future/emerging ideas are also addressed. The text is highly interactive and encourages students to apply ideas and develop their understanding of concepts through a number of case studies and other activities. Each chapter is supplemented by a number of helpful additional readings and website materials and is suitable for students at senior undegraduate and postgraduate levels.
As the name suggests this text is best used with students how are new to Human resources, that said there is a vast amount of useful text for those who have been in the HR sector for some time
This text has been added to my recommended reading lists for students studying Leading, Managing & Developing People at post graduate level. The text is written in an accessible style, whilst also adopting a critical stance on contempoary HR issues.
This is very good text that introduces the full range of concepts in HRM. This will be a welcome addition to our current HR texts and also be beneficial for CIPD modules we are currently delivering.
A good text introducing a full range of concepts in the HR area. This will also be useful for several of the new modules we are introducing on the CIPD programmes for 2011
We do not have a specific HR module on the MBA programme but this text would be useful in adding an additional dimension to several of our other modules.
Well written and crafted in a format that meets the needs of International students for whom English is not a first language. Inclusion of end of chapter case studies and self test questions, can be utilised for group work and the overall layout is most helpful to busy Lecturers crafting their sessions.
I will certainly be recommending this as a key resource for next academic year′s students.
This is a fabulous book and I will be recommending it to my students.
The content is much more reflective of ′real′ world challenges of people management - offering a more critical account and a welcome change from the abundance of ′how to′ rational, prescriptive HRM texts. Well done to the author!
All the learning features are very good. The online resources for students and direct links to articles will be very useful.
Level to high for the college
I am not teaching any modules for which this would be suitable. It was sent unrequested.
I was looking for an applications based text.
Critical, practical and well organised this is a good introductory text which will be a useful addition to any HR reading list
This text provides a good solid overview of the principle components of the HRM cycle especially for undergraduates.
Excellent! I recommended to have several copies in the School Library!
Easy to understand for HRM students in the undergraduate level 3.
With clear outlines and key learning goals this book provided a whole picture on what to expect after reading a book.
Discussions at each chapter helped students to explore and analyse issues.
National and International context as well as HRM in practice in other organisations really helped understanding of the subject in many contexts.
this book is an excellent resource for students of human resource management. it provides a comprehensive and critical perspective on the theoretical and practical aspets of HRM.
