About the Book

The story of Caro's quest for a new language for sculpture is told through these extracts from letters and interviews. Contemporary critical reaction to Caro's sculpture is also traced through selected press cuttings from his principal exhibitions and other major events of his career. Caro's working processes and views on sculpture are detailed both through an engaging chronological examination of his entire development and through previously unpublished documentary images of the exhibitions, places and personalities that influenced his work.

Table of Contents:

He then became Director of Contemporary Art at Annely Juda Fine Art from 1985 to 2002. During this time he organised several international touring exhibitions of Caro's work including the retrospectives at the Trajan Markets in Rome; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; La Pedera, Barcelona and Caro's Last Judgement at the Venice Biennale in 1999. Review :
'It's the best book ever written on my development as a sculptor.' Anthony Caro '... a landmark publication.' www.megakles.com '... for anyone interested in the art and art world of the fifties and sixties, this book will be essential reading.' James Hall, Art Quarterly 'The text is enlivened greatly by the huge number of photographs...' Jewish Chronicle 'The principal virtue of this book is how it connects Caro's biography, his travels and friendships with the development of his thought as a sculptor. The influence of visits to America on the development of the early work, his links with artists David Smith, Kenneth Noland and Jules Olitski and with critics Michael Fried and, particularly, Clement Greenberg, are revealed in great and compelling detail. The subsequent narrative brings equally important understanding to the later twists and turns of the work as new issues of materiality, scale and content were confronted... This beautifully produced book ... is essential reading for all who seek out the background to the production of art.' Architects' Journal '... the most detailed chronicle yet of Caro's many accomplishments...' From the Mayor's Doorstep, Arts Newsletter by Piri Halasz '... an exemplary book... Barker's unique access to Caro's personal archive ... makes this publication the most authoritative and substantial on the artist so far...' Alan Shipway, The Art Book 'The first monograph to present a comprehensive overview of the artist's lifetime quest for the New Sculpture... With a wealth of archival and contemporary sources, the reader can trace Caro's views on sculpture accompanied by an engaging chronological examination on his entire development from hitherto unseen letters and interviews.' Art & Architecture 'Ian Barker's thoroughly researched Anthony Caro: Quest for the New Sculpture is an important cultural and historical study that sheds light on many questions about the development of 20th century sculpture in Britain and the United States, as well as suggesting new lines of inquiry for future cultural historians.' Ian Findlay-Brown, World Sculpture News '... is as useful as it is enjoyable... the book is a documentary of Caro's entire life... What this book offers that no other book on Caro could have is that personal dimension, through which the importance of Caro's friendships stand out in relief.' Art History
