About the Book

A quarterly journal committed to political modernization, "Renewal" is read by researchers, Parliamentary candidates (many of them now MPs), party officials and academic advisors on the Party's inside track. It was set up after the 1993 election defeat precisely to play this role. It helps to focus debate, clarify ideas and advance policy. This double issue includes: "The End of the Politics of Inequality?", "The Challenge of a Scottish Parliament; a "Features" section; "Left Abroad"; "Briefing" and "Feedback". "Renewal" has the critical resources, and the reputation and base in New Labour (the editorial advisory board includes Tony Blair, Robin Cook, Clare Short and David Milband), to provide the kind of contribution that should enable its readers to be at the heart of debates on New Labour's strategy and performance in government, right through the first term. Recent issues include: Tony Blair on Labour's political purpose after the election; Robin Cook on 21st-century radicalism; Judith Church on the new women MPs; Geoff Mulgan, Carey Oppenheim and Andrew Gamble on Labour strategy; and European perspectives from the German SPD, Sweden's social democrats and the Italian government's left coalition.

Part 2 The end of the politics of inequality?: from fractured Britain to one nation? - the policy options for welfare reform, Ruth Lister; equality, security, justice and freedom - on the core values of the Centre-Left, Bob Haveman.
