About the Book

This work contains papers presented at the International Symposium on Mis-Matching of welds organized by the GKSS-Research Centre, Geesthact. "Mis-Matching of Welds" aims to identify and highlight the significance of strength mis-match on the fracture behaviour of welded or bonded joints and interfaces. It contains fifty-three papers contributed by eminent specialists from twenty-two countries. The papers present applications of fracture mechanics testing, failure assessment, and numerical analysis aspects of mis-matched weld joints or bimaterial interfaces. It contains new, challenging and innovative studies which clearly indicated the current interest and technological need in the area of strength mis-match.

Table of Contents:
Keynote lectures and summary of round table discussion. Part 1 Fracture of bimaterial interfaces: mixed-mode fracture mechanics of brittle/ductile interfaces; analysis of steady-state interface crack growth; asymptotic equations for bimaterial interface corners in the non-linear deformation field; fast interface crack propagation in thermo-mechanically loaded bimaterials; a study of the strength of the bonded face between dissimilar materials; subinterfacial fracture in bimaterial joints; elastic-plastic behaviour around subinterfacial cracks. Part 2 Fracture of mis-matched welds: strength mis-matching and its influence on the performance of welded structures; effect of weld strength mis-match on elastic-plastic fracture parameters for small tension loaded cracks; influence of strength matching and crack depth on the fracture parameters of welded joints; analysis of fracture behaviour of mis-matched welds on tensile panels - experimental and numerical study; evaluation of the fracture behaviour of strength mis-matched steel weld joints with surface cracked tensile panels and SENB specimens. Part 3 Defect assessment: ETM-MM - the engineering treatment model for mis-matched welded joints; effect of weld metal mis-matching on crack driving force; a finite element study of short cracks in mis-matched double "V" welds; prediction of overmatching effects on the fracture of stainless steel cracked welds; mis-matching effects in the large-scale testing of aluminium weldments. Part 4 Fracture performance: experimental investigation of the fracture behaviour of over- and undermatched pipeline girth welds; plastic behaviour of pipeline girth welds with softened heat-affected zones and undermatched weld metal; testing for weld metal yield strength; evaluation of the minimum toughness in a dissimilar metal weld joint by the tension test; application of very low yield strength consumables in the root pass of weldments to prevent preheating; long-term creep strength of transition welds joining boiler tubes of austenitic and ferritic steels; nitrogen redistribution in steel weldments.
