About the Author :
Dr Nicky Buller has been the laboratory supervisor of the bacteriology laboratory at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in Perth, Western Australia for over 30 years. Bacteria from terrestrial and aquatic animals are identified using phenotypic identification (conventional biochemical methods and MALDI-TOF), and molecular methods (PCR and sequencing). Dr Buller has trained scientists in aquatic bacteriology methods from Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Vietnam and French Polynesia and has given workshops on aquatic bacteria identification methods to students, including overseas students, at Curtin University as part of a Post Graduate degree in aquaculture management. Dr Buller is also author or co-author of 43 journal articles, 7 Australian and New Zealand Standard Diagnostic Procedures and many papers at conferences. She has been Principal or Co-investigator on 11 research projects investigating terrestrial and aquatic animal diseases, including supervision of PhD, Masters or Honours students. She is a reviewer for 16 journals and holds an adjunct position with Murdoch University.

Review :
"Overall, the result is a text with a wealth of up to date information that should be of value to diagnosticians and students of aquatic microbiology, worldwide." "The author and CABI have put together an extremely useful textbook that is easy to read and contains a lot of information that will be of use to all laboratories using traditional biochemical methods for bacterial identification, but also to those involved with molecular identification." "This handbook is set to become the definitive standard for the identification of aquatic bacteria for many years to come.... It is spiral bound for use at the bench and has a series of beautifully reproduced color illustrations." "This manual will be extremely useful to researchers in veterinary and animal health as well as aquaculture microbiology." "We recommend this manual to the aquatic bacteriologist. It supplies the important practical details (including excellent illustrations) of how to isolate and identify the organisms that workers are interested in."
