About the Book

This book is based on selected papers developed from the second International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) – Plant Disease Committee symposium, held in Cambridge in August 1996. Contributors include research workers active in this area from all parts of the world. The book is divided into five sections. The first discusses new and priority seedborne diseases from the different geographical regions of the world. The second addresses policy issues and is by authors from seed testing organizations, commerce and government. The next section describes new technical developments in seed health testing, particularly the detection of seedborne fungi and viruses using molecular techniques. There is then a group of papers evaluating new methods in comparative tests, conducted by both the ISTA-PDC and the International Seed Health Initiative (ISHI). The final part of the book examines quality assurance in routine seed health testing laboratories and in the production of high quality seed. The book represents an essential reference for all plant pathologists working with seeds and for seed testing laboratories.

Review :
"This book presents the proceedings of the Second International Seed Testing Association Plant Disease Committee Symposium held in Cambridge, U.K., 5-8 Aug. 1996. The 32 papers in this book discuss various topics dealing with seed health testing, ranging from disease surveys and pathogen detection methods to national and international policy. . . . Most of the authors of chapters did a good job of utilizing figures, graphs, and illustrations to present their information. Seed Health Testing: Progress Towards the 21st Century is a reference book that should be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of horticulturists and plant pathologists that are associated in any way with the seed industry, including university faculty as well as employees in the private sector. A copy should also be in the library of private and public employees that are interested in the development of seed health testing policy."--HortScience
