About the Book
This international handbook provides comprehensive and authoritative information on over 600 universities in 34 countries or regions of the Commonwealth: Australia, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Cyprus, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, South Pacific, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom, West Indies, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The "Yearbook" contains contains chapters on each university, organized alphabetically by country. Each entry includes name and title of institution and full postal address; telephone, telex and fax numbers; e-mail and cable addresses. The staff lists are the major feature of the "Yearbook" and form a comprehensive source for locating academics in the Commonwealth. There are over 250,000 staff records.
For those universities that are members of the ACU the full entries include: principal officers listed by name in order of seniority; alphabetical listing by subject department of all teaching and research staff; directors of special academic, research and other centres listed by name; deans/heads of faculties listed by name; contact officers, listed by name and post, and arranged alphabeticaly in order of area of administrative responsibility; heads of university campuses/colleges; degree qualifications, with awarding institutions, for all staff listed. For those universities not yet in membership of the ACU, information is included only for the executive head and the registrar. A series of specially commissioned articles provides overviews of the university systems in the larger Commonwealth countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.
Written by leading authorities in the countries concerned, these essays range widley over issues of current interest and normally cover historical perspective, recent developments, relations with government, finance, staff and student matters, structure and range of courses and admission policies. New features in this 71st edition include a new country section containing information on the 21 universities of South Africa including full staff lists for certain major institutions and Commonwealth-wide lists of key contact officers compiled on an institutional basis and identifying up to 35 areas of special administrative responsibility.
