About the Book

End-users are not a new phenomenon, they have been clients of specialist libraries and information units for a considerable time. They are, after all, the people seeking and ultimately using information, irrespective of the method of retrieval. Traditionally, hard-copy literature searches were usually performed by the end-users themselves or occasionally by librarians and information specialists acting as intermediaries. The purpose of this book, after a decade of growing hands-on experience by end-users, is to look at many of the important issues involved when non-information specialists are engaged in executing their own online literature searches. Professional concerns are examined including the development of new training and advisory roles for search intermediaries. The varying approaches to end-user searching, front-ends, gateways, CD-ROMs, command language, etc are discussed and compared. The attitude of some major online hosts towards the developing end-user market are included. An important feature is the inclusion of several in-depth case-studies. These provide details of companies' search strategies employed by inexperienced searchers and some of the costs involved.

Table of Contents:
Software developments, J.A.Large; end-users and the dynamics of information access - the view inside CAS, Dick Kaser; intracom - the key to opening-up the end-user market for online services, Martin Turner; evaluating the use of several approaches to online literature retrieval by research scientists, Peter T.Bysouth; assessing the potential need for end-user online literature searching by scientists within a research association, Peter T.Bysouth; the Binder Hamly end-user project, Helen Butcher; case study - operation experience in an end-user experience; end-user searching with CD-Rom, R.Cassels and S.J.Whittal; end-user searching within Glaxo Group Research Ltd - an evaluation of the dialog medical connection, Trevor Boyd and Karen Warne.
