About the Book

The century between the Conquest and the middle years of the reign of Henry II witnessed the emergence of the English nation in all its essential facets: territorial, structural, social. The profound changes occurring in the wake of the Conquest are surveyed and discussed in thesixteen papers from the 1988 Harlaxton Symposium by scholars from a variety of disciplines.

Review :
[Essays] review the profound change brought about in England during the 12th century... illustrat[ing] the preoccupation with class and privilege, the social and economic differences between southern England and the Scottish border districts, and the varied richness of contemporaruy monastic culture. The standard of the contributions is consistently high, and the quality of the illustrations is superb.
