About the Book

St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury (d.988), was celebrated in his own day as a scholar and churchman, a reviver of the monastic life, and a statesman. He was regarded as a saint from the moment he died, and his reputation remained high in the English church throughout the middle ages. Here a distinguished group of scholars discusses Dunstan; the places associated with him; his Classbook and Pontifical; and the architecture and arts of the book that flourished at Canterbury in his time. The landed estates that underlay such activities are examined and a positive identification is offered of the author of the biography which spread Dunstan's fame far beyond the confines ofCanterbury. The contributors are: N.P. BROOKS, M.D. COSTEN, D.J. DALES, R.D.H.GEM, TIM TATTON-BROWN, HAROLD GOUGH, MILDRED BUDNY, JANE ROSENTHAL, JENNIFER O'REILLY, RICHARD GAMESON, ALAN THACKER, MICHAEL LAPIDGE, DAVID ROLLASON, B. O'CUV, T.A. HESLOP, NIGEL RAMSAY and MARGARET SPARKS.

Review :
Papers celebrating the milennium of Dunstan's death, ranging through discussions of Glastonbury and Canterbury to the manuscripts, liturgy, cult and hagiography associated with the saint... A useful list of manuscripts and an exhaustive index complete this beautifully printed volume, enriched with numerous valuable and relevant plates and maps. JOURNAL OF ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORYThe general calibre of the papers is very good...wide-ranging in topic...some particular problems connected with Dunstan are well served by this volume. EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPE An apt commemoration of Dunstan, by all accounts learned and judicious. The papers vary in focus (archaeology, land economy, paleography, Dunstan's cult and hagiography)...are well documented and persuasively argued. Likewise and abundance of handsome plates makes this book an art-historical treasury for Anglo-Saxonists. JOURNAL OF MEDIEVAL LATIN This collection provides us with important materials for the history of Dunstan.
