About the Book

The core of the story are the author's diaries of the Normandy campaign of 1944 which resulted in the Unconditional Surrender of Germany in 1945 and military occupation by four armies. The Americans got the scenery, the French got the wine, the British got the ruins, and the Russians got their revenge. The author then had exceptional opportunities to sample German reaction to defeat and foreign rule, being posted to a Town Major near the Ruhr and travelling more widely than most. Later, he went into Berlin before the Wall had even been built let alone pulled down, and researched unofficially inside the Russian Zone when it was a ruthless police state known as the DDR. But more than one man's testimony is required to convey experience of a shattered, starving Europe with some cities 98 percent destroyed by bombing and by battle, where most of the bridges had been blown, where there was no gas, water, electricity or postal services, and where like an overturned ant hill nine million freed slave labourers were on the loose, many of them armed, angry and desperate, and many millions of German refugees were trudging home or away from the dreaded Russians and everywhere murder was a nightly occurence. After seven years in Germany, the author sought out new witnesses to flesh out the diary entries and interviews: Germans who had suffered in the concentration camps, Jews who had survived the ghettos and extermination camps in the East, Allied prisoners of war who had slaved for their masters in the mines, hardened escapers from Colditz in danger of execution by the SS, survivors from Belsen - and their liberators - Germans whose mayors surrendered at once, others caught in the streets where the invaders were forced to fight their way in, schoolboys on the scrounge for food, who stole from first the Nazis and then the British, soldiers on both sides who endured intolerable conditions or were several times wounded, border crossers when the Iron Curtain was elementary - many of them women, some of them children or teenagers; also the occupation troops, who felt like guards on a vast concentration camp and the distractions they found - gliding, photography - which helped them forget that they were rich, privileged people amid millions of the starving poor.
