About the Book

Often described as Prince Charles' favorite architect, Quinlan Terry is at home in every traditional style, from Classical Greek to Roman, Gothic to Renaissance, and Baroque to Neoclassical. Terry's son, junior partner Francis Terry, is recognized as a brilliant talent and is as highly regarded for his thoughtful design as for the breathtaking architectural drawings that are his hallmark and which stand out as works of art in their own right. Together, the father-son duo are at the heart of a resurgence of interest in an architecture and design that is both livable and inspiring. Fluted columns rise beside doorways to explode in Corinthian capitals of exquisite craftsmanship and structural integrity. Coffered ceilings within living rooms are carefully proportioned to invite and comfort. Throughout the work, it is the attention to detail, to craftsmanship, to reasoned proportions that is everywhere apparent. The Practice of Classical Architecture features the work of the firm from 2005-2015, and includes Kilboy, the stately country house in County Tipperary, Ireland; Kingsham Farm in Sussex, England; elegant town houses in Regent's Park and Richmond-upon-Thames, London; offices, shops, and residential buildings; the hotel at Hampton Court Station; theaters and auditoriums; a memorial garden in Taipei, Taiwan; as well as ongoing work, such as Locuston Estate in Kentucky. The book also showcases more than 40 master drawings by Francis Terry, artful renderings that are at once beautiful, powerfully compelling, and expressive of one of the highest aims of architecture very much like the houses and spaces built by this extraordinary firm.
