About the Book

The 12-step Recovery Programme, used by organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, has helped hundreds of thousands of addicts lead drug- and alcohol-free lives. Many addicts, however, cannot relate to or accept the spiritual nature of AA or NA, which requires a belief in God or a higher power. There are alternatives for those who can benefit from these programmes, but whose religious scepticism could impede recovery. Groups such as Rational Recovery (RR) and Secular Organizations for Sobriety (SOS) offer paths to addiction recovery that adopt a nonspiritual, humanistic outlook. From a treatment perspective, a cognitive-behavioural form of psychotherapy known as Rational-Emotive Therapy, or RET, strongly complements the realistic philosophy of RR and SOS. By replacing the AA concept of the higher power with that of "ever-present Reality", this approach provides hope for addicts who value independence of thought and action. "The Thinker's Guide to Recovery" is the "Big Book" of rational recovery, presenting a logical plan that asks readers not to "turn their will and their lives over to the care of God", but to take concrete action based on what science has learned about the physical and psychological roots of addiction. After showing readers the underlying similarities between AA's 12 steps and RET therapy, Peiser and Sandry take a chapter-by-chapter look at each of the 12 steps to rational recovery. They explain how, taken together, these steps can help addicts conquer harmful, self-destructive habits and the myriad of negative feelings that lead to relapse. "The Thinker's Guide to Recovery" supplements, rather than replaces, existing approaches to recovery and relapse prevention, with the added dimension of providing specific, scientifically inspired techniques to help readers overcome their addictions.
