About the Author :
Patricia D'Antonio, PhD, RN, FAAN is Associate Professor of Nursing and Associate Director, Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania. She is the editor of Nursing History Review, the official journal of the American Association for the History of Nursing. Dr. D'Antonio's clinical specialty is adult psychiatric/mental health nursing, which she is a clinical specialist in. Her teaching work includes course director for "History and Health Policy," "Introduction to Professional Nursing," and associate faculty for "Nursing and Inquiry." She is the lead editor of Nurses' Work: Issues Across Time & Place (Springer, 06) and author of Founding Friends: Families, Staff, and Patients at the Friends Asylum in Early 19th Century Philadelphia (Lehigh University Press, 06). Another book, the result of NIH-funded research, is forthcoming: American Nursing: Neighborhood Work and National Mission. She has published in Journal of Women's History, Bulletin of the History of Medicine, The Canadian Bulletin of the History of Medicine, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Nursing Research, The American Journal of Nursing, Nursing Inquiry, Lancet, and the Nursing History Review. A Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Dr. D'Antonio sits on the advisory board of the United Kingdom Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery, and serves on numerous editorial boards and review committees. Her awards include the "Best of the Journal of Nursing Scholarship - Profession and Society"; the "Barbara Brodie Nursing History Fellowship" from University of Virginia; the "Lavinia Dock Award" from the American Association for the History of Nursing; and an AJN "Book of the Year award" for her co-edited, Enduring Issues in American Nursing (Springer).
