About the Book

Trinitarian theology sits at the heart of Christian doctrine, yet how many believers understand this foundational truth of the faith? Perhaps more importantly, how many believers understand what is at stake in holding to a biblical understanding of this core tenet of the faith? In this primer on Trinitarian theology, readers are invited to ask forty pertinent questions, including: What is the Trinity? Why is it important for Christians to know the doctrine of the Trinity? What does the Bible teach us about the Trinity? What happened to the Trinity at the cross? How do we apply the doctrine of the Trinity to the Christian life? Ultimately, questions about the Trinity are questions about God. Taking the time to prayerfully explore and answer such questions will lead one to a deeper knowledge of him. In 40 Questions About the Trinity, readers will find helpful and encouraging guidance for this endeavor.

Review :
"Christians have lots of good questions about the Trinity, but sometimes even the most responsible theologians seem to be changing the subject or avoiding the questions. This book is the perfect match-up between the questions people are asking and the answers theology has to offer. Both responsive and responsible, 40 Questions About the Trinity is a truly useful book."--Fred Sanders "Torrey Honors College, Biola University" (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) "Christians often approach the doctrine of the Trinity with fear and trepidation, unsure where to begin and sometimes wondering why to even bother. Luke Stamps and Matthew Emerson offer us quite the gift in 40 Questions About the Trinity. This book provides an excellent introduction to the center of Christian thought, the Living God, as Stamps and Emerson's text orients readers to the history of this doctrine while also providing clear and precise explications of technical, trinitarian terminology that is grounded in the exegesis of Holy Scripture. May we learn from them how to speak truly and faithfully about our God."--Daniel Lee Hill (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) "In this well-organized and clearly-written book, Luke Stamps and Matt Emerson offer a gift to students of Christian doctrine. They show how the doctrine of the Trinity is grounded in Holy Scripture; they trace the development of the doctrine through discussion of some of the major controversies and theologians within the tradition; and they provide a helpful re-articulation of one of the formulations found in that tradition. This book will serve as a helpful resource to both students and scholars."--Thomas H. McCall "Timothy C. and Julie M. Tennent Professor of Theology, Asbury Theological Seminary" (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) "The doctrine of the Trinity is central to the Christian faith yet it can also be confusing. It is easy to get disoriented navigating the triune nature of God biblically, logically, and in the history of interpretation. What Christians need are trustworthy guides to help them along the way. I can think of no other book that covers so much ground in such short space, clarifies the difficult questions, and introduces the history of thought. This will be one of the first books I give to people who have questions about the Trinity and myself will be returning to it often. My prayer is this book will continue the retrieval of historic Christian doctrine that has been championed by so many across the centuries."--Patrick Schreiner "Associate Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary" (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) "The doctrine of the Trinity may seem confusing and beyond our comprehension. Emerson and Stamps, of course, don't claim to solve the mystery, but they clearly unpack for readers the doctrine of the Trinity so that readers are able to grasp the elements of the doctrine. They demonstrate that the doctrine is grounded in the scriptures and rooted in history. They also explicate the doctrine in systematic categories. Readers will find this book to be accessible, faithful, and one that will lead them to worship our triune God."--Tom Schreiner "James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary" (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) "These are the right questions to consider regarding the Trinity and Emerson and Stamps are the right authors to consider these important questions. 40 Questions on the Trinity is exemplary in showing how Biblical reasoning and theological reasoning come together to articulate a faithful doctrine of God's triunity. Moreover, this book will be sure to serve readers well as Emerson and Stamps bring a myriad of trinitarian conversations to an accessible level for students and church members alike. I will be utilizing this book with students for years to come and hope it gets the wide reading it deserves."--Ronni Kurtz "Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary" (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM) "40 Questions about the Trinity is a splendid contribution to Kregel's 40 Questions series. Matt Emerson and Luke Stamps have once again teamed together to produce an excellent work that is grounded in Scripture, informed by leading thinkers throughout church history, and which engages the key questions and issues of our day. Students and church leaders will be blessed by this timely work which celebrates and affirms the conclusions from Nicaea on its 1700th anniversary. I am thrilled to see the publication of this outstanding volume on the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. It is a genuine joy to recommend this thoughtful, readable, and faithfully orthodox work."--David S. Dockery "President and Distinguished Professor of Theology, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary" (8/15/2025 12:00:00 AM)
