About the Book

The crisis of the left is an historic rethinking and renewal project, not an end of history. All political value systems (liberalism, conservatism, socialism) have in the past been forced to undergo painful criticism and re-evaluation of their politics, and they have revitalized themselves, because their values speak to core problems of the human condition. Seeming confusion and loss of certainty are necessary parts of the renewal process, now underway with the collapse of communism and the decline of the social democratic welfare state. Confession indicates both willingness to confront past error, and confirmation of the commitment to renewal. John Nagle's work sets the context for left rethinking, identifies crucial positions for reworking, and offers tentative ideas about an emergent new synthesis. A renewed left politics is essential for building a progressive counterbalance to a dominant global liberalism.

About the Author :
The Author: John D. Nagle was educated at MIT and Harvard University. Professor of Political Science at Syracuse University for thirty years, he has taught and conducted research in London, Strasbourg, Bonn, and Marburg, among other locations. He has published numerous books and articles on comparative political system performance, on right-radicalism and neo-fascism in Europe, and on political elite recruitment. Professor Nagle is from the generation which bridges Old and New lefts: active in the antiwar movement of the 1960, but skeptical of the identity politics of the new social movements.

Review :
...a superb and well-written commentary with fine theoretical reflections on major contemporary and historical developments... a necessity and joy to read, both for general and academic interests. The text conveys a wealth of information on numerous countries and social, economic, and political issues. (Isidor Wallimann. Ph.D., University of Fribourg and School of Social Work, Basel, Switzerland: author of 'Estrangement: Marx's Conception of Human Nature and the Division of Labor' and coeditor of 'The Coming Age of Scarcity: Preventing Mass Death and Genocide in the Twenty-First Century') I think others will share the view that rethinking the left after the Cold War requires taking seriously many of the criticisms and alternatives emanating from liberal and even conservative positions without abandoning the priority to diminishing social inequality that has always characterized leftist thought. The critique of left-wing 'endism' is particularly powerful. The vision of instantaneous, total social transformation with liberty and justice for all has been the fatal conceit of much thinking on the political left. The political and moral dilemmas of everyday life will not so readily disappear. In a powerful mixture of careful conceptual analysis, suggestive summaries of serious criticisms of conventional 'left' positions and personal memoir. John Nagle gently skewers the mythic pretensions of socialist 'endism.' This is simply the best account I know of that combines a survey of the crisis in left thinking and practice with a mapping of the routes out of the impasse. (John Agneu, Professor, University of California at Los Angeles)
