About the Book

This Festschrift, in honor of Dr. Stowell C. Goding, was compiled as a lasting tribute to this most distinguished scholar of the French language and foreign-language education. In the introductory portion, in addition to a chronology of Dr. Goding's achievements, and three of his recollective short stories, the editor includes his personal and engaging interview with Dr. Goding, conducted at the Goding farm in 1991-92. Part One consists of ten essays by authors of national and international renown. Topics include French literature and foreign-language education and methodology. Twelve personal vignettes comprise Part Two, and reflect the positive impact Dr. Goding has had on the lives of so many over his long and productive career. Through their common interests and appreciation, the 18 contributors share in Mel Yoken's homage to Dr. Stowell C. Goding.

Review :
«Mel B. Yoken, himself a distinguished scholar and teacher of French, and former student of Stowell Goding has done an outstanding job as editor in bringing together a great variety of papers which he groups under two titles 'essays' and 'vignettes' which achieve a remarkable consistency in their portraiture of the dedicated professor and brilliant man whose activity the contributors evoke.» (Germaine Bree, Wake Forest University) «In this book, through Mel Yoken's skillful interview technique, one can truly claim to have met Stowell Goding. The demi-god comes to life as one reads the pages of 'Stowell Goding and France', and learns that this Massachusetts Institution is a warm human being who has influenced the lives of people around the world. Professor Yoken's brilliant collection of interviews, essays and vignettes is indeed a 'Festschrift' or festive-writing of Goding.» (Jennie Celona, Worcester State College) «Mel Yoken's 'Festschrift, Stowell Goding and France', is an invaluable work for researchers and students studying language and literature, or anyone interested in an outstanding collection of essays, vignettes...Goding has truly dominated the 20th century with his outstanding linguistic accomplishments and achievements, and here is a volume which is indeed worthy of the man it honors.» (Myrna Delson-Karan, Quebec Government House) «Stowell Goding is beautifully and deservedly honored by this 'Festschrift'. His associates, friends and former pupils will find here in the well-organized work of Prof. Mel B. Yoken a fascinating picture of Stowell being interviewed, and recounting his own memories...The whole volume is an inspiring tribute to a great teacher.» (Stephen A. Freeman, Middlebury College) «Like Stowell Goding's career, Mel Yoken's book is a heartening success story. Both chronicle the rise to prominence of foreign languages in the American curriculum before the Second World War to the present...This volume is a treasure. It will engage all those interested in foreign languages as well as everyone working on the future of our country in the global society.» (Claire Gaudiani, Connecticut College) «The texts and tributes gathered bear warm and eloquent witness to the lasting influence of Stowell Goding on the careers - indeed, the entire lives - of several generations of his former students and colleagues. His passion for all things French - and for life itself - has clearly been passed on to those fortunate enough to have known him.» (Brian Thompson, University of Massachusetts, Boston)
