Este estudio examina a fondo a Serafin Estebanez Calderon, el unico de los tres grandes costumbristas que no ha sido analizado detenidamente. Abarca su actuacion como prosista, poeta, historiador, arabista y politico, pero se fija especialmente en sus obras mas notables - la novela historica Cristianos y moriscos y su coleccion costumbrista Las escenas andaluzas - y descubre la intencion que esta a la base de estos escritos. Pone en contraste la obra de Estebanez y la de los otros costumbristas principales, Mesonero Romanos y Larra, y traza el papel del autor en la vida literaria e intelectual del siglo XIX. Tambien presenta varios escritos de Estebanez anteriormente ineditos.

About the Author :
El autor: Ronald J. Quirk es Profesor de Lenguas Modernas y Jefe del Departamento en Quinnipiac College, Hamden, Connecticut (EEUU). Recibio el bachillerato en Trinity College y el doctorado en Brown University. Ha publicado estudios sobre Cervantes, Valle-Inclan y la literatura espanola de los siglos XVIII y XIX en varias revistas.

Por fin tenemos una idea clara y coherente de la vida y obra de Serafin Estebanez Calderon, 'El Solitario.' Quirk estudia en este libro la prosa y poesia del gran costumbrista andaluz y dedica interesantes comentarios sobre el polifacetico novelista, periodista, poeta, militar, abogado, bibliofilo y arabista. La presentacion del ambiente de Estebanez - sus relaciones con Larra y Mesonero Romanos, su influencia sobre el estilo de Valera, su lugar en el mundo intelectual decimononico - junto con un cuidadoso estudio de la cronologia y sucesivas modificaciones de las 'escenas andaluzas' (1831-1832, 1841-1843, 1845-1846) revelan mucho sobre un autor que queria 'descubrir lo mas tipicamente espanol, encontrarlo en Andalucia y preservarlo.' Quirk presenta tambien por primera vez varias obras ineditas. Este sera un libro tan util como imprescendible para el estudio de los costumbrismo en Espana. (David T.
