About the Book

This book's basic topic is the analysis and performance of percussion music composed from about 1800 through 1970 (Beethoven, Darius Milhaud, Elliott Carter, Ingolf Dahl, Paul Creston, Gary Burton) in the western world, with considerable biographical information on that music's composers that is generally unavailable in any other single volume to date. Musical styles included are classical, jazz, avant-garde, and fusion. Analytical approaches include various emphases on rhythm, harmony, melody, form, timbre, and performance.

Review :
«Those who use this book cannot help developing an informed perception of percussion artistry today.» (William Kearns, University of Colorado at Boulder) «Larrick's book is a winner.» (Edward L. Kottick, The University of Iowa) «Geary Larrick is an excellent percussion scholar and performer who writes with great clarity and authority. It is a pleasure to recommend his new book¿» (Richard Weerts, Editor, NACWPI Journal) «Geary Larrick's new book is insightful. His essays on the mainstream of percussion literature from Beethoven to Burton are written with the viewpoint of an excellent performer.» (Richard Pinnell, University of Wisconsin at La Crosse) «There is much in this well-written, essentially analytical study, that any composer will find absorbing.» (HH, Penn Sounds) «This very fine book should be of great interest to percussionists, composers, and students. The analyses will prove extremely useful in preparation for performance of the works, and will provide a solid foundation for further research. Dr. Larrick's book is a significant addition to the existing body of percussion literature.» (Rosemary Small, NACWPI Journal)
