About the Book

Brings Machiavelli’s wisdom to bear on the myriad crisis—political, environmental, cultural, viral—that loomed in both his time and our own.

About the Author :
Nathan Crick is professor of communication at Texas A&M University. He is author of Democracy and Rhetoric: John Dewey on the Arts of Becoming, Rhetoric and Power: The Drama of Classical Greece, and The Keys of Power: The Rhetoric and Politics of Transcendentalism and is editor of The Rhetoric of Fascism.

Review :
"Crick's probing analysis moves well beyond the debate over whether Machiavelli did or did not teach that the end justifies the means. He makes excellent use of Machiavelli's Florentine Histories to provide concrete and very helpful instances of the very dilemmas that force on us seemingly tragic choices." --CHOICE "Nathan Crick's The Way to Hell is a lively study of Machiavelli. Crick offers an approach to reading Machiavelli, including some of his most problematic passages, that offers readers a set of reading strategies that help illuminate a Machiavelli who is both humanistic and humane even as he remains problematically pragmatic and realistic." --Ned O'Gorman, author of Politics for Everybody: Reading Hannah Arendt in Uncertain Times
