About the Book

This special issue is based on a recent seminar that proposed to reposition the patient more centrally in the body of health communication scholarship in order to contribute to an increased understanding of the patient's role and influence in health-related interactions. Each paper stresses one or more of the following themes: * the patient's functional identity, * the importance of participation, * patient-centered outcomes, * cultural identity in understanding the patient's experience, * health communication scholarship, and * the need for future research. It is anticipated that this special issue will stimulate dialogue -- both confirmatory and critical, but above all heuristic -- that will increase the understanding of the actual and potential roles of patients (and people in general) in the improvement of health and well-being.
