About the Book

Credentialing testing is a burgeoning field that includes the certification or licensure of teachers, physicians, dieticians, automotive mechanics, nurses, accountants, architects, golf professionals, realtors, pharmacists and occupational and physical therapists. In recent years, the field has grown to include testing high school students as a graduation requirement. The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing(1985) states the various conditions necessary in developing credentialing tests. The five papers in this issue provide original perspectives on ways to better meet the Standards. The following topics are discussed: * The relationship between the study of the profession through practice analysis and the creation of the test specifications driving test development. * The interdependencies between reliability, types of item formats, and standards. * The process in standard setting as well as the evidence needed to support the process leading to the valid use of test scores for pass/fail decisions. * A two-faceted model for developing validity evidence governing item development. * An important phase of item development dealing with content judgment studies in the context of performance testing.
