About the Book

Discussions about development seldom take note of the feelings and opinion of those who are the subject of development. Recognising the inherent limitations of this approach, the authors have recorded the common man′s views on development and have placed them in a theoretical perspective. The authors have deliberately broken away from conventional social science research and have based their book on a set of open-ended and unstructured dialogues.

Table of Contents:
PART ONE: NEEDS, DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL ORDER Introduction Life Experience and Expectations of Dialogue Participants PART TWO: GOVERNMENT AND DEVELOPMENT Introduction Dialogues PART THREE: SOCIETY, THEN AND NOW Introduction Dialogues PART FOUR: ON HAPPINESS Introduction Dialogues PART FIVE: VISION OF SOCIETY Introduction Dialogues

Review :
`strikingly uninhibited and fresh.′ -- Indian Express Magazine 29.6.86 `a very good document, well written′ -- Journal of Rural Development, Vol. 5, No. 6, November 1986.@Q `does a service by systematically putting together the voices of poor people who have a ring of truth and honesty . . . If more books could be written like this and read by the planners, one might expect some sensitive and considerate changes′ -- Development Update, 5:2 Jan 1988 `a novel application of critical theory . . . The volume is an important pioneer effort, one that should be duplicated and improved all the world over′ -- World Development (UK) Vol 15 No 2 1987 `That (oral history) can be a powerful tool is shown in this collection of interviews with villagers in Bihar state, India. By discussion concerning the realities of their life, their labour, their philosopy and their comments on how the development process has affected them, light is thrown on the by-products of ′modernity′ and development.′ -- Journal of Contemporary Asia
