`As a trainee interested in matters existential, I have been put off in the past by the long-winded and confusing texts usually available in academic libraries. Thankfully, here is a text that remedies that situation... [it] provides a readable and insightful account′ - Clinical Psychology Forum

This text demystifies an exciting approach in psychology, offering a lucid account of the philosophical origins of phenomenological theory as well as introducing the phenomenological perspective on key issues in psychology.

Spinelli describes the development and principal tenets of phenomenology and outlines the aims and practice of the phenomenological method. He then presents the position of phenomenological psychology on the central topics of perception, social cognition and the self. The profound implications of phenomenology for the precepts and process of psychotherapy are also explored. Finally, the author addresses the relationship between phenomenological psychology and other major contemporary approaches within psychology, clarifying points of divergence from, and potential convergence with, these other systems.

Review :
`I originally came to psychology with high hopes of studying the richness of human behaviour and experience... It took me a long time to realise that much of the content of courses laundered and trivialised human experience, reducing it to straightjackets of theory, such that the resultant hotchpotch seemed totally remote and alien to my life and concerns.

I began to think there must be something wrong with me, but from time to time discovered the occasional book that restored my faith in people within the discipline (or allied to it) who seemed genuinely interested in what others were experiencing. To those gems... I would add Spinelli′s The Interpreted World.

This is a beautiful book. I was moved by the concern the author demonstrates in communicating with his readership... Spinelli has taken great care to explain very clearly the key issues and to give examples that all of us can share... It succeeds as an excellent and comprehensive introductory source text for the scholar new to the phenomenological orientation, as well as for those more experienced readers who need to return to, and clarify, central arguments and concepts′ - Journal of the Society for Existential Analysis

`An excellent "primer" in phenomenological psychology... clearly written and jargon-free... Spinelli utilizes everyday life experiences and experiments and demonstrations from mainstream psychology to clarify phenomenological principles... I highly recommend [this] book′ - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology
