About the Book

Pastors, students, and scholars not in the midst of language coursework often find it difficult to maintain their knowledge of biblical languages like Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. For those looking to do so in a meaningful but manageable way, this devotional offers 365 short daily readings, pairing an Old Testament passage in Hebrew and Greek with a corresponding New Testament passage in Greek and Latin. Lexical notes in English are included as a way of facilitating a comfortable reading experience that will build one's confidence and ability in reading the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint, the Greek New Testament, and the Latin Vulgate. "Our goal and our purpose for this volume is to keep you in the languages, keep you fed in the Word, and hopefully spark a desire to explore more deeply how the New Testament at its core relies upon the Old Testament Scriptures." -- from the introduction

Fisher is lecturer in biblical studies and theology at St. Petersburg Christian University, Russia.

Review :
"This is an excellent book for retaining your biblical languages. Here you'll find a rich selection from a wide variety of authors. It's the best reader I know of. Highly recommended." -- David Alan Black author of Learn to Read New Testament Greek "'Use it or lose it!' they say of biblical languages. This attractive and practical volume offers a simple way to keep exercising your language muscles. Texts are thoughtfully selected and attractively laid out so that your knowledge of one biblical language can aid your recall of another, whether Hebrew, Greek, or Latin. Best of all, these texts illuminate intertextual connections, making them ideal for devotional reflection and prayerful response." -- Carmen Joy Imes associate professor of Old Testament at Biola University "In line with the faithful wisdom of generations past, Daily Scriptures invites devotees into the interwoven tapestry of the Scriptures. Readers hear the grand story through digestible verses, providing just enough text to hone language skills without being overwhelmed (and therefore, giving up) and just enough truth to contemplate with patient awe. This is just the sort of volume for which many faithful students have been longing." -- Amy Peeler associate professor of New Testament at Wheaton College "This book is a treasure! For the language lover, Daily Scriptures is a unique joy, offering an opportunity to read through compelling biblical themes in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. For the developing language learner, the simple format and lexical notes bring the languages to life and help with readability. Overall, this book gives readers daily reflection not only on these three languages but also on the great story of Scripture from creation to Christ's second coming and God's ultimate reign. This book is a great way to keep your language study fresh or turn your language study into spiritual devotion!" -- Beth M. Stovell associate professor of Old Testament at Ambrose University "Within the pages of this book, Jacob Cerone and Matthew Fisher offer a brilliant way for readers acquainted with one or more of the biblical languages to keep up with their training. The readings, provided for every single day of the calendar year, make it possible to hone language skills (with vocabulary and glosses included). However, the book does much more: the short selections focus on meaningful and faith-related passages that promise to inspire users as they go about their daily activities. This book not only springs from a great idea, but it is also beautifully and accessibly carried out!" -- Loren T. Stuckenbruck professor of New Testament at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich "Cerone and Fisher are to be commended! This volume will aid learners of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin to increase facility in the languages over a calendar year, all the while discovering more deeply the biblical story from creation to renewed creation under the reign of God. Aids in vocabulary and morphology are clearly defined and helpful for the reader. I continue to benefit from this resource. Warmly recommended!" -- Heath A. Thomas president and professor of Old Testament at Oklahoma Baptist University "I know of no other devotional book like this one. It will draw you into the beauty of God's Word while simultaneously strengthening your knowledge of Hebrew, Greek, and Latin." -- Robert L. Plummer Collin and Evelyn Aikman Professor of Biblical Studies at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary "This is a beautiful resource that will inspire love not only for three ancient languages but for Holy Scripture itself. The carefully selected passages resonate with the thematic continuities of the Bible, thus edifying the soul and the cerebral cortex." -- Constantine R. Campbell coauthor of Reading Biblical Greek "Cerone and Fisher have drawn upon their own experience, expertise, and sheer joy in the biblical languages in producing this volume. Thoughtfully balancing the needs of student, scholar, and pastor, the authors have provided a brilliant resource that is as textually acute as it is spiritually attuned. May this devotional reader aid many in delving more deeply and more consistently into the riches of Scripture through the ancient languages." -- William A. Ross assistant professor of Old Testament at Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte "This is a uniquely valuable resource for reading short biblical texts in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. The thoughtful selection and arrangement of the readings provide brief examples of connections within the biblical canon and the relation between the biblical writings and their early Greek and Latin translations. Thus, this book gives us an opportunity not only to practice our reading skills but also to engage the text in ways that exemplify the importance of working in the original languages." -- Rodney A. Whitacre author of A Grammar of New Testament Greek
