About the Book

Sleeping With The Enemy Benny, an Israeli police officer, never met the Palestinians unless it was at a roadblock or interrogation room. As part of the Intifada uprising, Adnan, a Palestinian journalist, planned to stab Israeli soldiers. Back then, neither Benny nor Adnan imagined they'd meet in, of all places, Japan. Twenty young leaders from Israel and the Palestinian authority find that they must travel thousands of miles from home to overcome their turbulent past and their uneasy present to simply become friends. Every year ten potential leaders from each side of the conflict were brought together in the land of the rising sun to debate their differences. Perhaps it's the distance from all that they hold dear--or the discovery that they hold so much in common--that allows them to see each other with fresh and forgiving perspectives. For the Japanese government, this encounter is a chance to get a foothold in the Middle East peace process. For the participants, it's a chance to talk and shout, argue and reconcile. They're making peace here in the Far East--and they're doing it Middle Eastern style. After ten days in Japan, Benny and Adnan find themselves bridging gaps of 100 years of conflict and even sharing a room. Filmed among the glittering Tokyo nights, around the traditional temples of Kyoto, and in the city of Hiroshima still under the horrific shadow cast in 1945, "Sleeping with the Enemy is a co-production of Israeli and Palestinian television. Shot and edited just before the second Intifada broke out, this film profiles the two men who soon find themselves, once again, on opposite sides of the violent conflict. Behind Enemy Lines In the midst of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, two former friends and present day enemies, embark on an emotional journey into Intifada-land, in search of the origins of the bloodshed. They first met over four years before on a joint peace mission to Japan. While embracing the "Tokyo Spirit" of understanding, the two vowed to take home a message of peace. Soon after their return, however, the second Intifada erupted. But now they have a second opportunity to bridge the gap that divides their people. Benny Herness, an Israeli police officer, and Adnan Joulani, a Palestinian journalist, spend a week traveling together through places which have become symbols of the dispute. Each has selected locations of personal and political significance to convince the other of his own truth. They visit a Jenin refugee camp, survey terror ridden Jerusalem, view the disputed Temple Mount, and meet with the family of a suicide bomber. Adnan's beloved cousin was shot dead by an Israeli settler. Another cousin went on a shooting rampage in the heart of Tel Aviv. Benny, himself a settler, trains special forces to combat Palestinian militants. "Behind Enemy Lines is an emotional and dramatic quest through the milestones of the conflict. Despite the huge gap in their perspective, Adnan and Benny try to find ways to communicate, to see through the eyes of each other. Their success can serve as a single ray of hope in pessimistic times.

A Thrilling But Totally Believable Murder Mystery

Read this in one evening. I had planned to do other things with my day, but it was impossible to put down. Every time I tried, I was drawn back to it in less than 5 minutes. I sobbed my eyes out the entire last 100 pages. Highly recommend!
