About the Book

Superintendent Duncan Kincaid is called to investigate the shocking death of a woman found burned beyond recognition in a Victorian warehouse in south London. When his lover and partner, Gemma James, is asked to trace a friend's missing roommate, she and Duncan discover that their cases have several disturbing links. Set against a backdrop of Dickensian Southwark, repository of old secrets, the case plunges Duncan and Gemma into the dark recesses of human relationships. Two women are missing, a little girl is abducted, and no one is really what they seem. The detectives must discover the truth, as innocent lives hang in the balance.

About the Author :
Deborah Crombie is a Macavity Award winner and a finalist for the Edgar Award and the Agatha Award, as well as a New York Times bestselling author. She has written more than a dozen novels and is best known for her contemporary mystery series featuring Scotland Yard's Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. Among this series is Dreaming of the Bones, which was selected as one of the 100 Best Crime Novels of the Century by the Independent Mystery Booksellers Association. Michael Deehy is an Earphones Award-winning narrator and an actor whose career has taken him around the world performing in a multitude of plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, Shaw, Synge, and a host of other playwrights. He divides his time between the United States and England, where he has performed in both regional theater and in London's West End, as well as a number of national television shows.

Review :
"Crombie has laid claim to the literary territory of moody psychological suspense owned by P. D. James and Barbara Vine." -- "Washington Post" "Crombie keeps this series on its toes with her smooth procedural techniques and engagingly eccentric characters." -- "New York Times Book Review" "Great characters, a rich plot, graceful writing, and dramatic, tense scenes. The result is a fantastic read...The character-driven plot doesn't stop with Kincaid and James. Even the secondary characters are fully developed, and their stories are equally important to the book. Crombie shows that she's a master of action as well...This novel of physical and emotional challenges succeeds at all levels. It is, in short, superb." -- "RT Book Reviews (41/2 stars, Top Pick!)" "In this dark house, the author's light shines brightly." -- "Richmond-Times Dispatch" "It's a web of gossamer-thin clues that police, under the patient Superintendent Kincaid, work to untangle as they race against time to find the imperiled Harriet. Myriad subplots that have accrued from past entries slow the action in places, but Duncan and Gemma are such interesting and attractive characters that few readers will mind." -- "Publishers Weekly" "Michael Deehy delivers an outstanding, nuanced reading...The individual threads are woven together expertly to form a rich and coherent whole. It's a whole made even better by Deehy, who creates distinctive, revealing voices for the characters and reads with beautiful pacing. In a burning building with fire-fighters, for example, we hear their fear and their self-control without being aware of Deehy the narrator. This is a superb performance from start to finish. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award." -- "AudioFile" "Rich and complex." -- "Times (London)"
