Table of Contents:
EDITORIAL. Will Human Resource Development Survive? (Darren C. Short, John W. Bing, Marijke Thamm Kehrhahn). ARTICLES. The Influence of Framing on Attitudes Toward Diversity Training (Courtney L. Holladay, Jennifer L. Knight, Danielle L. Paige, Miguel A. Quiñones) Framing, considered to be a psychological manipulation of the salience of certain aspects of a message, and gender are examined for their independent and interactive effects on pretraining attitude. Results show that a traditional title (for example, "Diversity Training") with an inclusive content frame reduced the perception of backlash and increased the perception of the likelihood of transfer as compared with other conditions. Men provide more negative reactions overall, as well with a frame having limited content and remedial assignment. Implications for diversity training are discussed. Determining the Relationship Between Drivers? Level of Education, Training, Working Conditions, and Job Performance in Kenya (Fredrick Muyia Nafukho, Barbara E. Hinton) This study examines the educational level of drivers in Kenya, the training institutions for these drivers, and the working conditions in order to determine approaches to improving job performance. Regression analyses showed a significant relationship of these variables with accident rate. Policy implications are highlighted. Using Personality Tests in Leadership Development: Test Format Effects and the Mitigating Impact of Explanations and Feedback (Lynn K. Harland) Providing a forced-choice response format is compared with that of a normative (or Likert-type) response format in terms of accuracy, control, respectfulness, and usefulness. Although initial reactions to the forced-choice format are more negative than for the normative format, reactions to the two formats were similar after participants received feedback. Implications for such testing as well as 360-degree feedback are discussed. The Effect of Workplace Gender and Race Demographic Composition on Hiring Through Employee Referrals (Mary E. Taber, Wallace Hendricks) This research investigates the effects of the demographic characteristics of a workplace on employee referrals in a Standard & Poor?s 500 products and services firm. After controlling for workplace demographic composition, racial minorities and men are more likely to use employee referrals than women and whites. Implications exist for employee orientation and socialization as well as recruitment. Gender-Based Approach to the Understanding of Leadership Roles Among Retail Managers (Hye-Shin Kim, Soyeon Shim) Retail managers from various national retail chain stores were surveyed to determine the effects of gender on leadership roles as well as the combined effects of gender, other personal characteristics, job characteristics, and other personal values. Female retail managers displayed a greater affinity for the mentor and broker roles than did male retail managers when including these other variables. Implications for leadership development are considered. FORUMS. Shaping the Future: Writing Up the Method on Qualitative Studies (Tonette S. Rocco) Transformational Learning in Leadership and Management Positions (Samuel L. Elkins). REVIEW. The Innovation Equation: Building Creativity and Risk Taking in Your Organization by Jacqueline Byrd and Paul Lockwood Brown REVIEWED BY JANET POLACH.
