About the Book

"Math Essentials, High School Level" gives high school math teachers the tools they need to help prepare all types of students (including gifted and learning disabled) for standards-based mathematics testing. This dynamic book covers thirty key objectives found in a typical secondary mathematics curriculum, including algebraic thinking; graphs, statistics and probability; linear and quadratic functions and their properties; and geometry and measurement with applications. Each objective contains three lessons: manipulative, pictorial, and independent practice. Lessons include worksheets or patterns and answer keys, and each section ends with a practice test and answer key.

Table of Contents:
Additional Objectives. Notes to the Teacher. About the Author. SECTION 1: ALGEBRAIC THINKING AND APPLICATIONS. Objectives. 1. Simplify algebraic expressions involving one or two variables. 2. Solve a linear equation involving one variable with a fractional coefficient. 3. State an equation with one or more variables that represent a linear relationship in a given situation; apply the equation to solve the problem, if appropriate. 4. Apply number properties to solve word problems. 5. Apply ratio and proportion to solve numeric problems or problems involving variables. 6. Identify two given linear equations, given in algebraic form or graphic form, as parallel, perpendicular, or with the same x- or y-intercept. 7. Identify algebraic equations or graphs needed to represent a system of linear equations described in a given situation; solve the system by a substitution method or a graphical method. Practice Test. SECTION 2: GRAPHS, STATISTICS, AND PROBABILITY. Objectives. 1. Find the probability of a compound event (independent or dependent). 2. Interpret the actions represented by a linear or a quadratic graph or a scatter plot. 3. Find the ordered pairs for the x- and y-intercepts of a given linear equation in two variables either algebraically or graphically. 4. Find the slopes of one or two lines on a grid and from given equations. 5. Match a graph without a given scale to the relationship described by a given situation. 6. Apply linear inequalities to solve real-world problems; match a linear inequality in two variables to its graph. Practice Test. SECTION 3: LINEAR AND QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS AND THEIR PROPERTIES. Objectives. 1. Find solutions to linear functions of the general form y = ax + b. 2. Find specific solutions for a given quadratic function in order to solve a problem. 3. Recognize and apply the general forms of linear and quadratic parent functions. 4. Find an algebraic expression for the generalization or rule represented by linear data collected or given in a table; extend the table or sequence to new values, using the rule or number patterns. 5. Find an algebraic expression for the generalization or rule represented by quadratic data collected or given in a table; extend the table or sequence to new values, using the rule or number patterns. 6. Identify the domain, range, intercepts, and other properties of a function from a given graph, equation, or situation. Practice Test. SECTION 4: GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT WITH APPLICATIONS. Objectives. 1. Apply the circumference and area of a circle to solve a real-world problem. 2. Apply the area of parallelograms and triangles to solve real-world problems. 3. Apply special angle and shape properties to solve a real-world problem involving variables. 4. Apply the Pythagorean theorem to solve geometric problems with or without variables. 5. Find missing measures using similar two-dimensional shapes. 6. Apply ratio and proportion to solve geometric problems. 7. Find the area of a composite two-dimensional shape by using rectangles and triangles. 8. Recognize characteristics of three-dimensional shapes (cylinders, prisms, pyramids, and cones). 9. Apply the volume of prisms or cylinders to solve real-world problems. 10. Find dimensions or other measures of a right rectangular prism that correspond to dimensions or measures of a similar given prism. 11. Find the volume of a composite three-dimensional shape by applying perspectives and side views of rectangular prisms. Practice Test.
