About the Book

This expanded and updated revision combines enduring principles of good college teaching with insight and examples of recent scholarship and practice. Rather than advocating a wholesome shift to often untenable alternative classroom structures, Lowman promotes teaching effectiveness through the preferred and popular lecture/discussion format.

1. What Constitutes Exemplary Teaching? 2. Understanding Classroom Dynamics 3. Developing Interpersonal Skills and Teaching Style 4. Analyzing and Improving Classroom Performance 5. Selecting and Organizing Material for Classroom Presentations 6. Enhancing Learning Through Classroom Discussion 7. Planning Course Content to Maximize Interest 8. Integrating Learning In and Out of the Classroom 9. Evaluating Student Performance 10. The Art, Craft, and Techniques of Masterful Teaching.

About the Author :
JOSEPH LOWMAN is professor of psychology and assistant dean of arts and sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has taught since 1971. He has won several awards for his own teaching and serves on the editorial boards of Teaching of Psychology, Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, and College Teaching.

Review :
"Mastering the Techniques of Teaching is a work by a professor for professors. Lowman clearly shows a commitment to college teaching and a desire to improve the quality of instruction.... This book should be read by the individual and shared at the departmental level." --Journal of Research and Development in Education, Praise for the First Edition "Full of useful advice, much of it based on research about teaching.... Mastering the Techniques of Teaching can be a useful and informative book for the legion of professors who are aware of their own instructional frailties but are willing to mold some wings on their feet of clay." --American Journal of Education, Praise for the First Edition "Lowman's approach to effective college teaching is well grounded in relevant research.... [He] has given us a useful and excellent guide for the journey we must take to fulfill our obligations to the students we teach." --Change, Praise for the First Edition "For faculty members who want to do better, Joseph Lowman's Mastering the Techniques of Teaching is useful." --The New York Review of Books, Praise for the First Edition "Presents a great deal of general, common-sense advice and an interesting perspective on what it takes to be a master teacher." --Contemporary Psychology, Praise for the First Edition "This is an excellent book and it is hard to believe that anyone in the profession, regardless of his or her subject area, would not benefit in some measure from reading it.... Lowman has mastered his craft and he possesses the ability to pass that mastery on to others." --Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, Praise for the First Edition "Masterfully balancing the practitioner's need for concrete suggestions and the scholar's quest for intriguing ideas, this book offers tips to be tried in class tomorrow and ideas to be mused on for months." --Maryellen Weimer, professor, Penn State University-Berks Campus "I have used the first edition of Joe Lowman's book for years and found it most helpful. The new edition is a must for teachers and faculty developers." --Milt Cox, University Director for Teaching Effectivness Programs, Miami University "Lowman's book has it all. Excellent suggestions for active learning, a conceptual model for guiding teaching practices, and research results that nicely support the ideas for enhancing teaching that he advocates....The best book I've read in a long time on college teaching." --Anthony F. Grasha, professor, Department of Psychology, University of Cincinnati "Joe Lowman has somehow managed to preserve the best of his original edition while adding important and relevant new material. I am confident that this edition will be as well received by my students as the first edition has been--something that does not happen often." --James O. Hammons, professor, College of Education, Educational Leadership, Counseling and Foundations, University of Arkansas
