The papers contained in this SAE Special Publication, Engine Modeling Techniques: SI and Diesel cover recent research efforts concentrated on analytical studies of intake flow characteristics, combustion and emissions in compression ignition and spark ignition engines. Apart from presenting new concepts of modeling, the chemistry of combustion and emission formation in CFD codes, methods of optimizing the intake flow characteristics by systematically modifying the intake manifold, and port geometry are presented. In particular, issues such as Cycle-to-Cycle fluctuations, EGR-distribution and stratification, model-based diagnostics and emissions are addressed. This publication also examines novel approaches, such as the extended expansion engine or the two-stroke linear engine, through application of phenomenological models. In some instances, modeling results are directly validated by experimental findings obtained in parallel to simulation efforts.
