About the Book

Our right to privacy is increasingly being challenged in today's world, by hidden cameras that take our pictures, computer technology that records everywhere we go on the Internet, a government that gathers information in the interests of national security. Author Ron Fridell explores the issue of privacy, helping young readers to understand the effort to balance people's wish for privacy and our need for safety.

Review :
Issues related to privacy have heightened since September 11. The chilling effect of the Patriot Act has confused some people and angered others. For this reason, books dealing with privacy and security are greatly needed so that young patrons can form their own opinions regarding this issue. Fridell has written an easy-to-read overview of specific topics like searches and seizures, credit-card fraud, identity theft, student records, drug testing, medical records, and library records. There are warnings about protecting personal information, and case studies regarding challenges to students' rights in high schools. Though brief, the glossary is an important feature because it defines terms like "private facts tort," "probable cause," "reasonable suspicion standard," "slippery slope argument," and "voyeur"-terms students need to know to understand the serious implications of privacy violations. The last chapter, "Privacy and Terrorism," covers homeland security, Operation TIPS (Terrorist Information and Prevention System), airport searches, and TIA (Total Information Awareness) and privacy. Eight chapters cannot possibly cover this very complicated subject, but students may gain enough knowledge to understand the issues brought forth on the nightly news and in newspapers., School Library Journal September 2004
