About the Book

R. Conrad Stein examines the events that were occurring on American soil during World War II. Highlights include the surprise enemy attack on military bases at Pearl Harbor, Rosie the Riveter, air-raid drills, and espionage. Stein shows the impact of World War II on the home front from the bursts of patriotism to racism towards Japanese Americans.

Review :
World War II represents the most massive military commitment in American history. By war's end over fourteen million American servicemen and women had been mobilized to wage a war that stretched across the entire globe. This war etched deep changes in the social fabric of American society. Women, who had traditionally remained at home caring for their families, were encouraged to take jobs in various defense plants. Rationing of goods such as foodstuffs, automobile tires, and gasoline altered the way in which American civilians led their daily lives. Camaraderie spread across the nation and brought Americans together in a common cause. Conversely, while American soldiers fought in foreign lands to oppose dictatorial forces, issues of racism persisted at home. The plight of African-Americans and interned Japanese-Americans are but two examples of the ironies of waging a war for freedom abroad while inequality persisted at home. Author R. Conrad Stein discusses this domestic arena in this outstanding book, and recreates a world where everyday life in America became a vital part of the war effort. The author notes that he grew up during these war years. This combination of firsthand experience and outstanding social history make this a fascinating book and one that rings true. Mr. Stein's book is a "must read" for younger and older readers with an interest in World War II., Children's Literature
