About the Book

The spinal cord is a nearly two-foot-long bundle of nerves and fibers that makes up part of a vital communication network within the body. Spinal cord injuries can happen to anyone, and leave many people paralyzed. Author Elaine Landau looks at the causes and treatments of these injuries, and what's being done to help those who are left paralyzed.

Review :
This series of books appear to be well researched. All have extensive footnotes. They cover the history, diagnosis, treatments and research for future treatments, coping mechanisms, therapies, and recovery prospects for each disease. The books are aimed at helping young people understand the disease covered by each. Since a different author writes each, there is a difference in the readability. The books by Wade and Landau are books one could sit down and read. The Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder by Williams is difficult to wade through. Each uses cases of people with the disease to explain how it feels to have it and how each person copes or attempts to overcome the disease. Some are well known such as Christopher Reeves and others are not. A profile of the disease starts each book, then there are eight chapters covering it, next come several pages of questions and answers, a disease timeline, glossary, chapter notes, sources for more information including books, organizations, and internet addresses. Each has an index, which is very weak. If a student wanted to use this book for research, the index would be less than helpful. The entries are short and the terms listed are not helpful. For example, I don't think a young person researching Lou Gehrig's Disease would look for Yankee Stadium in the index (even thought Mr. Gehrig played for the New York Yankees). Names of researchers are also listed in some volumes. With all the research done to write these books, it seems a waste not to have a functional index., Appraisal Spring 2002 (LIBRARIAN)
