About the Book

Readers will amaze and astonish their friends with experiments that are "magical." They'll show them a Ping-Pong ball that defies gravity and in the process learn why. The experiments will appear to be magic to the people who watch the show. However, by doing the magic, readers will learn about the scientific principles behind magic. Many of the projects in this book also contain excellent ideas for science fair projects. Readers will then be ready to learn about air pressure, the laws of gravity, optical illusions, and more, while delighting spectators with a magical show. Many science demonstrations are perfect for use in the classroom.

Review :
From two similar series by one publisher, these formula offerings are low in appeal and effectiveness, and too expensive to be recommended. Earthworms is from a science fair series, the other three a science project series. In the latter, about half the projects are labeled appropriate for science fairs, and according to the introduction these will need to be modified or extended for science fair use. A science fair is meant to provide an opportunity for students to learn and use the scientific method. Students are expected to select a topic, develop and conduct research, document their procedures, analyze their results, and present their findings. While browsing the projects in these books could help stimulate a student's thinking, raise a question, or suggest an idea for a topic, they do little to foster or guide the inquiry, exploration, interpretation, or habits of the scientific method, and in some cases work against it.Barrow's book poses twenty five investigations, each with a topic question, procedure, observations, and discussion, followed by a few questions for further investigation. With the topic and experimental questions already framed, and explanations of the observations provided, the need for doing the experiments is eliminated. In Gardner's magic book, each project has a simple procedure, followed by an explanation of 'the science behind the magic', and a suggestion for 'exploring on your own'; limited scientific method here. About the Physics of Sports is more open-ended. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the principles explored in the activities. Procedures are presented in paragraph form with questions about what was observed and 'what if' follow-up questions. The volume on measuring takes the middle ground, with fewer explanations than the magic book, but not as much questioning as the sports book. And although the subject appeal of the magic and sports books suggests possible utility as a source for ideas for student-driven explorations, their value in this regard does not warrant the price. The Complete Science Fair Handbook (Scott Foresman, 1990) while somewhat dated in its research sections, is concise, well organized, and emphasizes the process and discovery of science. The Massachusetts State Science Fair web page (www.scifair.com /project.htm) is another good resource for science fair guidance., Appraisal Spring/Summer/Fall 2000 (Librarian)
