About the Author :
Steinar Kvale (1938-2008) was professor of educational psychology and director of the Centre of Qualitative Research at the University of Aarhus, and adjunct faculty at Saybrook Institute, San Francisco. He was born in Norway and graduated from the University of Oslo. He continued his studies at the University of Heidelberg with an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship and was a visiting professor at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, and West Georgia University, Carrolton, and the University of Bergen. His long-term concern was with the implications of such continental philosophies as phenomenology, hermeneutics, and dialectics for psychology and education.

Review :
A complete guide. Excellent coverage of the theoretical and practical aspects. Excellent book for those doing undergraduate or postgraduate research. Will recommend to my students next year. Fantastic all-round text on interviewing. This is an excellent guide for students who are new to qualitative research. The book gives excellent conceptual background to interviewing and discusses many of the important issues that interviewers need to be reflexive about. My one criticism is that it could provide more examples (e.g. specific interview questions) to better highlight the points being put across. A must textbook for qualitative research methods both at undergraduate and postgraduate students. This text will be a great addition to the research methods module. It is manageable for the students given the intensity of the module but comprehensive enough to give them a thorough overview. This text is being used for Research methods with two cohorts of outdoor students [Outdoor Leadership and Adventure Sports Coaching]. The text provides an easy guide, is written in an accessible style, and so far my students have been very positive about the book′s recommendation. The use of key points at the end of each chapter is particularly welcomed as students can access this as a quick guide and then investigate further as they deem relevant. The parts of the Qualitative Research Kit are so far proving very useful. Thank you Sage for your support and continued assistance. I adopted “Doing Interview” by Steinar Kvale (2007) because the book is easy to understand for novice qualitative researchers and because I am familiar with the works of Steinar Kvale (InterView, 1997). These two books will make an excellent blend together. The first Kvale Book on interview could be used as resource for professors whereas this simplified version “Doing Interview” can be used for college students who are starting to know about Qualitative method, especially in interview. I have used this book for my teaching material in Autumn 2011. I found it very useful. I have ordered it for the libraray used--2 copies. I have also suggested this for my students who want to pursue interview. not clear for humanity students I appreciate the concise and specific focus of this book, and the qualitative research series it is part of. This book is user friendly and practical and so I think that the students will respond well to it. Due to the concise focus of each book on various aspects of qualitative research, the books are more affordable, applicable and relevant for coursework masters and honours students specifically. This book speaks directly to my students in terms of what they need to know and by providing practical guidelines for how to progress with their qualitative research.
There is most definitely a need for options such as these shorter and content-specific books for honours and coursework masters students as they are focusing on more specific approaches to research. It is also valuable for students who have limited financial budgets and who also find the broader and more extensive research manuals to be confusing and largely inapplicable for their research needs.
This book fully meets my need for a concise yet comprehensive guide to this popular research method, which I can happily recommend to my final year dissertation students. This text is essential reading for any student or researcher with an interest in qualitiative research a good book for students to understand the essential steps to participating in interviews in their research Very informative and useful book for anyone considering using the interview as a qual. research method. It′s not ′just′ a practical book on ′how to do interviews′, it has a very useful section on ethics in interview processes and epistemological considerations.
offering good grounding in the subject area This is a great textbook, and I will definitely recommend it for my students to use for learning the basics of interviews and how they can be used in different paradigms. That said, any students who are interested in doing interviews will definitely receive a recommendation from me regarding this text. We advise this book to students who require a hands on guide towards doing interviews. A very good insight into interview techniques and ethical considerations. I recommend this to all my undergraduate and postgraduate students embarking on interviewing as a data collection tool as it is accessible and thought-provoking as well as confidence building Excellent guide for the process of qualitative interviewing. Good clear text The book gives good introduction to doing interviews, so we will adopt parts of it as essential for the course. An excellent book which is well written and easy to understand. There are some useful chapters which you can dip in and out of. Well recommended for anyone embarking on qualitative research as the book contains both theoretical and practical aspects of the interview process. The principles and practices of ethics has also been considered. This book is on my recommended reading list. We use Creswell (2009) as the core text and then direct students to books such as Fink (2009) if they are doing quantitative research and this book if they are doing interviews. I really like this series - and also recommend the one on analysing qualitative data. Will suggest it to students who are doing qualitative research next academic year as it gives good examples and clear ways of interviewing. An excellent text on interviewing for all research students I recommend this book to undergraduate students if they are considering interviews as a data collection option. It explores various and innovative approaches to interviews. Very useful. As with the other of Kvales′s texts this is essential reading for any student considering interviews as a method.
