About the Book

The author examines parental responsibility for their children’s development. The authors then summarize the functionalist perspective of deviance, the function of crimes, and how these perspectives have influenced the development of Emile Durkheim’s work like anomie. The authors then turn their attention to fear of crime in regard to social order. The authors then examine how the Tennessean newspaper The City Paper and its readers’ comments frame the coverage of the Kurdish Pride Gang. The authors then provide an insight into pluralism and politicized religion. I then assess and compare the theories of differential association, low self-control, and Black’s theory of social control for explaining deviance. The authors then focus on fear and risk perceptions of terrorism. I then enlighten the account of communication media technology and how it influences culture, control, as well as deviance. The authors then address how the development of technology has affected the nature of deviance and social control and what is the impact of media use among the young children. Finally, the authors examine how the sociological imagination of the individuals living in southeastern Turkey is constructed through the movie, The Bliss.

Review :
The concepts of crime, deviance, and social control are among the most complex and controversial social issues, specifically in the age of mass media. In their timely and topical book, author Sebahattin Ziyanak adroitly collected many comprehensive in‐depth essays. The Understanding Deviance, Crime, Social Control, and Mass Media: The Construction of Social Order is a well‐written gallant attempt for providing broad and up‐to‐date knowledge in those debated topics by using a multi‐disciplinary perspective. It is an essential resource and a must‐read for undergraduate, graduate students, and instructors seeking a comprehensive textbook. A timely book promising a prismatic exploration of deviance through technology and media offering significant engagement opportunities for classroom instruction and discussion while examining norms and national and global challenges to society and social order. Ziyanak offers a book ambitious in its scope, which examines deviance among young people in connection with social problems of our time such as COVID‐19, substance abuse, gun violence, innercity crime, and terrorism. This edited volume brings together contributions from scholars in different disciplines representing a diversity of perspectives. Timely and relevant, this book will be useful for scholars in sociology, criminal justice, legal studies, media studies, public policy, and other academic fields.
