About the Book

In Pseudonymity, the New Testament, and Deception, Terry Wilder provides a fresh answer to a vital question for New Testament studies: If pseudonymous letters exist in the New Testament, what can be said about their intention and reception? The author's analysis of this New Testament issue leads to a conclusion that impacts both exegesis and canonicity.

About the Author :
Terry L. Wilder is Associate Professor of New Testament and Greek at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. The author holds a Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Review :
Dr. Wilder's monograph shows that there was a concept of literary property in the ancient world which regarded it as illegitimate to fictitiously ascribe literary works to a person other than their actual author, and that orthodox early church theologians would not knowingly have accepted such works into the canon of Scripture. This is a valuable contribution to the debate on the propriety of admitting books known to be intended to deceive readers into the New Testament.--I. Howard Marshall, Emeritus Professor of New Testament Exegesis, King's College, University of Aberdeen Terry Wilder has provided New Testament studies a crucial monograph on the thorny question of pseudonymity in the New Testament. Well researched and engagingly written, this monograph sheds light on a difficult and complex subject...This is an essential reference work on this topic for all who wish to delve into the issue.--David L. Allen, Southwestern Babtist Theological Seminary "Midwestern Journal Of Theology " Terry Wilder's informative and comprehensive study on the nature of pseudonymity in the New Testament is a splendid contribution to this complex issue. With fresh insight, Wilder presents the case for traditional authorship of the New Testament writings in a way that is historically astute, brilliantly researched, and persuasively written. Wilder's outstanding work will become an essential reference for New Testament students who deal with this challenging subject in days ahead.--David S. Dockery, President, Union University
